  • This section of the gardens has an overstorey of large trees planted in the 19th Century, including Erythrina caffra (South African Coral Tree) and Agathis robusta (Queensland Kauri). Both are magnificent trees, with the Agathis being one of the finest specimens in Melbourne and registered with the National Trust. The dense shade they cast, and their root competition create a challenging planting environment that is found in many old gardens. Here Clivia miniata and Clivia X cyrtanthiflora flourish, brightening the dark area with their apricot-orange blooms.
